THE ROYAL DECREE of 2002, and subsequent “Ministerial Orders” from Spain set out redefining and modernizing the development for the future of the Spanish Horse (P.R.E.)
The new rules for breed improvement provided for 3 different levels of approval for breeding status, both for stallions and mares.
- REGISTER OF BASIC/PRINCIPAL REVISED HORSES
- REGISTER OF QUALIFIED REPRODUCERS This register represents horses, three years of age or older, judged by a Tribunal of Judges, and who display characteristics more favorable for breed improvement. These characteristics include higher minimum height (155m for stallions and 153m for mares), higher pointed morphological scores (any morphological component not getting more than a 5 out of 10 would result in disqualification from the Qualified Roster) - more developed racial characteristics, better movement, walk, trot and canter are judged-with no winging - demonstrated freedom (by radiographs and report by a veterinarian) from developmental bone disorders, OCD, etc., a good quality semen analysis in the case of stallions, and in the case of mares, ultrasound reports of breeding soundness.
As a reward for presenting a horse for evaluation in this category, those approved as Qualified Breeding Stock are approved for a permitted number of transported semen breedings.
- REGISTRY OF ELITE REPRODUCERS Horses that have achieved "Qualified" status are eligible for “Elite” status by their successes in competition, and the successes of their offspring.
This level has been designated, but not implemented as yet. It would allow more transported semen and also embryo transfer opportunities. |
